Mary was fed up with Bob and decided it was time to go home. He wasn’t listening to her and she had taken precious time out of her day to walk through the park with him. He had left her behind the first chance he got. First, he had gone off to say hi to a group of people having a picnic and now, he was at the lunch wagon waiting for a hot dog.
“Bob, let’s go home,” she said.
He glanced in her direction before turning his attention back to the people standing in line.
She shook her head and started walking away from him. “I’m leaving,” she called over her shoulder.
When he didn’t respond, she turned back around to yell at him and her foot caught on a rock. She fell forward, landing on her hands and knees.
“Are you alright?” A male voice asked.
Her cheeks burned as she rolled into a sitting position and looked up at the man standing over her. He was attractive with a mess of wavy brown hair and green eyes.
“I’m fine,” she muttered, brushing dirt off her pants.
He held his hand out and helped her up.
“I’m Mary,” she said, before mentally kicking herself for sounding so dense. Her eyes dropped to the ground, too embarrassed to look him in the eye.
“I’m Luke,” he said. “Are you here with someone?”
“Yeah, Bob is over there.” she gestured toward the lunch wagon, not bothering to look up.
“Is he your boyfriend?”
She wrinkled her nose and laughed. “I guess you could call him that.” She glanced over at the lunch wagon and saw that Bob was gone. There was only one man waiting in line now. “Oh, that’s not Bob!” She turned around, trying to find him.
Something rustled in the bushes next to them and a giant St. Bernard leaped out. He jumped on Luke, almost knocking him to the ground. His wet tongue rolled across Luke’s face leaving a trail of saliva.
Mary let out a long sigh. “That’s Bob.”
